So I think the next few posts will focus on some of the key elements that must be considered when you want to create a map. These are important whether it is a hand-drawn map, or a digitally created one (which might be shared as a printed static copy or one that is shared in a digital medium).

Some of these elements have evolved with the advent of digital apps, for example what scale a map is shown can vary when you zoom in and out on google maps or any digital app compared to a ‘traditional’ map that is printed at a particular scale. This allows a greater amount of information to be shown, but one must still consider what is shown at each scale range, how much detail is needed.

Next week I will kick this off looking at different elements. Until then I’m off to look at a map to plan a bike ride for the weekend!
